Summary

Sydarkivera offers a testbed for members and collaboration partners on a national and European level where various open source tools for longterm digital preservation can be tested in a vendor-independent and controlled environment. The testbed offers possibilities for testing and evaluation of software in use as well as the collection of metrics according to certain criteria that will be defined.

Over time, Sydarkivera will create different test workflows (bash-scripts) for complete packaging of SIARD-packages, among other things and we invite others to contribute as well.

Sydarkivera hosts several virtual environments with pre-installed software (see below). There are also options for creating new virtual servers according to user demands and preferences. Our chosen default operating system is CentOS 7, but it's possible to install other Linux distributions if needed. We prefer to use open source software only. (The Windows server currently installed is an exception).

If you and your organization want to know more about the testbed, please contact Mårten Lindstrand, Head of IT, marten.lindstrand(at)sydarkivera.se / +46 472 39 10 07.

Current environments

Verdandi - Windows-environment for archiving of databases

  • OS: Windows 10 Pro

Virtual Windows-environment used to test archiving of databases using software with Windows GUI. The environment currently has Microsoft Office and different webbrowsers needed to use the various tools and their output. Used to test archiving of databases with the standards ADDML and SIARD. There are multiple tool suites. How the different tools work and how to use them is described in the following lab reports.

Lab reports

Urd - Non-gui tools, CLI (FGSDB-Tools)

  • OS: CentOS 7 (RHEL)

Used to test CLI-based tools för handling and packing archive packages. Current software includes DBPTK and SIARD-suite.

Skuld - Fedora-environment for database archiving (DBPTK)

  • OS: Fedora 31.

Used to pack and manage SIARD-packages using Database Visualization Toolkit (DBVTK) v2.3.1

We are currently using the desktop version of Fedora 31 with the option to access via remote desktop on Windows-based systems.

Heimdall - Database server for example databases (FGSDB-DB)

Used to test and house various database servers and environments such as PostGRES, MS SQL Server 2019 och MariaDB. Contains example databases that can be used in other testbed environments.

Lofn - Software for validation of file types

Used for validation of file extensions / file types. Current installed software includes DROID, JHOVE and VeraPDF.

Snotra - Docker-based software

Current software includes Sydakiveras webapplication APP.
